Ethics, Supervision, and Boundaries - 4 CE hours
After a review of professional ethics, roles, and boundaries, we will take a more personal approach to professional ethics. Ethics is a living subject and is best learned in a live, interactive format. As massage practitioners, we work closely and intimately with our clients, but we often experience isolation and burnout in our own practices. When ethical conflicts, confusions, and challenges inevitably arise, we often feel that we have no place to take them. In this peer supervision class, we will explore your current professional issues and dilemmas, whether they be interpersonal, ethical, financial, COVID-related, or other. This is not a 'you should eat your vegetables' approach to ethics, but rather an opportunity to draw support and gain insight from your peers and mentors. The class size will be quite small and intimate, with a maximum of 10 students. You will return to your practice refreshed and with a deeper sense of clarity.
"I didn't anticipate that I would come to feel in community with 10 strangers so quickly. It's helpful and humanizing to hear other people's stories and what they are wrestling with in their practices, and also have the opportunity to sort through some of my own questions within a supportive community." -Alice Hunting
"This is the only ethics class I've ever taken that I wish were longer." - Mariah Vanhee
Brian Utting LMT has been teaching Continuing Education courses annually in New Zealand since 2016, including presenting at the 2019 Conference in Hamilton. Founder of the Brian Utting School of Massage (BUSM) in Seattle, WA in 1982, Brian was BUSM's Director, Director of Education, and a lead instructor there for 26 years. Brian developed and refined the curriculum at BUSM and taught many subjects, including anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, and a variety of massage techniques.
Brian has been teaching massage CE nationally and internationally since 1990. He designs his CE classes and programs so that the students really get the material and can take it home and apply it in their practice, rather than just being exposed to it. He teaches with a rare blend of knowledge, passion, precision, humour, common sense, and depth.
The course will cost NZ$90 and be hosted virtually via Zoom.
The proposed date is 21 February 2021.
